2002 NEWPORT-ENSENADA RACE THE FASTEST EVER!
By Amy Elliott; photo by Kitty James
The largest international yacht race, the Newport to Ensenada, has been a long-standing annual event - 55 years and going strong! This year's regatta, organized by the Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA) and sponsored by Tommy Bahama, was held April 26-28. There were 452 entrants including four from Mexico, and many records were broken. At first it didn't seem like it would be a record breaker; the rain was coming down hard at noon on Friday at the start line in Newport Beach, CA. Sailors donned their "foulies" of all colors and some even duct-taped garbage bags to their clothes.

Light winds up to 15 knots and rain soon turned into westerly winds of up to 25 knots, making the journey south fast-paced and exciting. The direction of the wind made the heading to Ensenada perfect, taking the fleet inside the Coronado Islands.

A few years ago, most of the fleet turned around on Saturday night in San Diego, knowing they would never make the finish line within the time limit of 11am Sunday.  But that wasn't the case this year -- nearly all the racers finished up the 125-mile course within 24 hours of the start!

The excitement rolled into Ensenada when the first of the boats, the catamaran Afterburner skippered by Bill Gibbs of Ventura, finished with a time of 10 hours, 55 minutes. Next came a couple of the ULDB-A boats - Magnitude and Medicine Man, who got into a tacking duel near the finish. Magnitude became the first monohull to finish with an elapsed time of 11 hours, 23 minutes, 53 seconds and Medicine Man was only three minutes behind. These two monohulls, and four others, broke the record of the fastest time set in 1998 by Roy Disney's Pyewacket. Dennis Connor, sailing for the San Diego Yacht Club, was at the helm of Stars & Stripes as he took first in the ULDB-B Class with an elapsed time of 13 hours.

Many racers continued the party onshore at Saturday's Giant Paella Festival. What's with this giant paella? It's a traditional Spanish dish of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables and rice, on this day cooked  in a huge pan resembling a super-size wok and served to 1000 people. Proceeds from the event further the efforts of the Cancer Association of Baja California to build a desperately needed "Free" Cancer Clinic in Ensenada that will provide treatment, programs and support to low income people.

The partying continued into the evening at bars, restaurants and the Centro Artesanal Arts & Crafts Center, which presented a Fiesta & Art Exhibit featuring live music, a pig roast and the opportunity to meet locally renowned artists displaying their wares. On Sunday the Awards Ceremony at the Hotel Bahia was moved up from 2pm to 12:30pm because many of the early finishers were partied-out and ready to head for home! (For complete race results, visit the NOSA web site.)
