CENTRAL ENSENADA
Museum of History (Museo de Historia)
A creatively designed rupestrian pathway and exhibition rooms focus on "Native People of Baja California" and "European Explorers and Missionaries." Donation fee. Open Mon.-Sat. 9am-2pm & 3-5pm, Sun. 10am-5pm, the museum is located in the northern end of the Riviera del Pacifico on Blvd. Costero. Tel/fax (61)77-0594. 
Regional History Museum (Museo Historico Regional) 
A permanent display of "People and Cultures of Meso-America" and changing exhibitions are housed in the 1886 military headquarters that served as the Ensenada jail until 1986. Donation fee. Located on Av. Gastelum near Paseo Calle Primera (Av. Lopez Mateos), it is open 10am-5pm, closed Mon. Tel/fax (61)78-2531.

Ex-Aduana Maritima 
Intriguing temporary cultural and historical exhibits are displayed in one of the oldest buildings in town, the former Maritime Customs House on Av. Ryerson #99, constructed in 1887. Open Mon.-Fri. 9am-4pm, closed weekends. Tel/fax (61)78-2531.

Science Museum ("Caracol" Museo de Ciencias)  
Interesting exhibition halls are dedicated to astronomy, physics, paleontology and marine sciences of Baja California. The saltwater aquariums and Noah's Ark are especially appealing to youngsters. City Gallery (Galeria de la Ciudad) 
Situated in the northern end of the Riviera del Pacifico on Blvd. Costero, the gallery features monthly exhibitions of Baja California artists. Open 9am-4pm, closed Sun. Tel. (61)77-3130.

Galeria de Perez Meillon 
This unique gallery shop features authentic Paipai and Kumiai Indian crafts by local artisans, plus one-of-a-kind Tarahumara and Casas Grandes pottery. On Blvd. Costero #1094-39 in Centro Artesanal Arts Center, it is open daily 10am-6pm. Tel/fax (61)74-0394, e-mail:[email protected]

Galeria La Esquina de Bodegas 
This intriguing bistro restaurant/bookstore/gallery features monthly exhibitions of Mexican and international artists. Stop by to browse, then enjoy an espresso, glass of wine or snack. Located at Bodegas de Santo Tomas Winery, this Indian Artists Workshop offers authentic local Paipai and Kumiai arts and crafts from 9:30am-2pm Mon.-Fri., weekends by appointment. Tel. (61)78-8780.

Estero Beach Museum  
An outstanding collection of folk art and artifacts entitled "40 Centuries of Mexican Culture" is displayed in chronological exhibition rooms at Estero Beach Resort, 6 miles south of town. Open 9am-5pm, closed Tues. Tel. (61)76-6225.

Art Gallery/Studio Los Arcos 
This captivating gallery offers original paintings, sculptures, fine and decorative arts by Baja California artists. Located in Ejido Esteban Cantu on the road to La Bufadora in Punta Banda, it is open Mon.-Sat. 10am-5pm, Sun. 10am-3pm, closed Tues. Tel. (615)4-2066, e-mail:[email protected]

EAST OF CENTRAL ENSENADA 
Museo Comunitario del Valle de Guadalupe 
An intriguing exhibition of Russian pioneer memorabilia and local Indian crafts are displayed in a curious Russian home dating from 1905. Tour the historic house and visit the "wa," a replica of a native Indian dwelling. Donations welcome. Open 9am-5pm (closed Mon.), the museum is located across from Monte Xanic Winery in Francisco Zarco, Valle de Guadalupe, just off Highway 3 to Tecate. Tel. (615)5-2030.
